Fun N Sun has a fulltime
activity office that sponsors a number of events, organizes tours, and
supports the numerous activities in the park. However, it is the
hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers that make things work. People
volunteer their time and expertise to teach classes, lead activities,
and supplement the work of paid employees for effective operation of
the park. Volunteers work in the Activity Office, manage the wood shop
and library, help with the food events, handle duties at the Rec Hall
and Dance Hall and handle front gate duties. They teach arts and
crafts, dance, and card games. They conduct exercise classes and run a
computer lab that provides lessons, individualized help and
presentations. Opportunities abound for anyone who wants to become a
volunteer.
There are also opportunities
to volunteer in the community. Park residents volunteer at several
large hospitals, churches, nursing homes and daycare centers, a nearby
childrens home, and at the world famous Gladys Porter zoo. Local
schools have a mentoring program for first and second graders who are
having problems learning to read. The program, called HOSTs (helping
one student to succeed) is popular with park residents who enjoy
spending time with children. Park residents assist with local parades,
the Jalapeno 500 bike ride, birding festivals and national wildlife
centers. Whatever your interest, there is a need for your time
